40 Days of Green Smoothie Review & Giveaway!

I love green smoothies.

I could drink one every day.

When Becky, the crafty genius behind Glue & Glitter asked me if I’d review her ebook, 40 Days of Green Smoothies, I leaped at the opportunity. How could I not?  40 days of a new smoothie, every day?

Sounded like a dream come true.

And 40 Days of Green Smoothies did not disappoint.  Although you don’t have to follow the 40 day plan to enjoy this ebook (you can totally pick and choose which recipes you’d like to try, which is what I’ll be doing moving forward), I decided to follow the recipes as recommended.  And now, a little of 40 days later, I am healthier, a little lighter, and totally in love!

My favorite thing about the book, other than the delicious recipes, was that these smoothies don’t use a ton of frozen fruit.  Not that frozen fruit isn’t great, but too much of it, and the health value of a smoothie flies downhill.  These smoothies are full of greens, filling, and each one was truly delicious.  I’ll admit that I like the taste of “greens” but that flavor was never too overwhelming, and the variety of flavors kept me interested from day to day.  I loved drinking these after a run, but as the summer gets closer, I can see some of these becoming my favorite bedtime snack to cool down after a hot, humid North Dakota day.

Becky gave me permission to re-print a recipe, and I thought I’d start with my favorite!  I’ve had one every day since the the 40-day challenge ended, and, I’m actually drinking one right now!

Smoothie two

Mexican Hot Chocolate Smoothie (Vegan, Gluten-free, Raw)

Serves: 1


1/2 frozen banana

handful of fresh spinach

1 T cocoa powder (I used raw cacao powder to keep the smoothie raw)

1 c almond milk

2 T flax meal (I ground this right before using to preserve the goodness)

pinch of cinnamon (okay, I use a whole tablespoon)!

pinch of cayenne pepper

2 cubes of ice

Instructions:  Blend.  Enjoy.

  1. oooh sounds great! Love green smoothies and I’m always looking for more recipes. In addition to the greens I often add pumpkin seed, hemp protein and/or ground flax. I always put a banana in my green smoothies. Tahini and cacao is another favourite :D

  2. I’m a pretty big fan of kale, spinach, mango, kiwi, allspice, cinnamon, and goji. Sometimes, if I need a pick me up, I’ll even add a few coffee beans.

  3. I love green smoothies after summer runs–they are a quick way for me to refuel and refresh. I love the idea of a Mexican Hot Chocolate, though general I am more of the berry with citrus variety (like a cherry limeade, etc). I like to save my chocolatey flavors for my nightly ice cream :D

        1. That is so weird – thank you for letting me know! I’m going to have to look into this more – I’ll do some research and let you know what I find out!

    1. I didn’t used to be – in large part because I hate drinking my calories! However, I really treat them like a shake now and focus on “chewing” them to start the digestion process.
      Also, it takes away the “rawness” of them, but I’ve heard of folks lightly steaming the spinach (and then cooling, of course) to take away the “green” taste if that is off-putting to you)!

  4. I love smoothies, and have gotten into the habit of freezing half of my bananas to get that extra sweetness …

    I get the feeling that my smoothie making tools will be enhanced pretty soon, so I am excited about that :)

  5. I’m terrible at keeping my green smoothies actually green… they almost always end up brown. My favorite combos are spinach+kiwi+banana+grapefruit and avocado+tomatoes+oranges (it sounds crazy but its fantastic!)

  6. I am a green smoothie virgin!!!! Never had one, never thought of it before. I definitely should win this book, LOL! Otherwise, I might have to buy myself a copy and give it a try. What have I been missing out on? I feel a change brewing in my life and this might be another great step. Awesome posts as always.

  7. My must-have ingredient for a green smoothie is a frozen banana. The green is almost always kale, though occasionally I change it up with collards or spinach. Everything else is up to fate! :)

  8. I normally put fruit, yogurt, and milk in my smoothies. I have one every morning. I tried spinach once – blech! I tried kale once – blech! I have never tried the spices, and may try the cinnamon.
